This week with the Rev KEVIN LOGAN, Vicar of Christ Church, Accrington

"GO FORTH and multiply!" We happily oblige. This is one commandment we rather like.

But how did God ever dream up such a delightful multiplication method?

Consider his thinking. The brain he had figured out. The heart ticked well in his heavenly lab. Kidneys were sculpted and the eye fine-tuned.

But how to duplicate it all? And repeatedly? Creator he was, but as loving Father to the universe he was going to have his hands rather full.

Now, he could have been a killjoy and installed a baby button behind Eve's left ear, labelled 'press in case of maternity.'

Or even stuck with the Garden of Eden piano stool (expectant Young Wives at a previous church swore the coffee lounge music seat had something to do with it).

Thank God his birds-and-bees research brought a better brainwave. And if he amazed himself with the final design, his creatures were astounded.

This delightful gift of sex reveals the Giver as does no other. He has a sense of humour, that's for sure. And more; an awareness of beauty, one-ness, warmth, mystery, fun, delight, intimacy... The words are endless.

So, sadly, is our misuse of what they describe.

Shame that we exploit such a gift for our own ends. Some use it as if going to the toilet, simply to relieve a need. Others sell it for money, advancement or power in relationships.

Those who do so miss the whole point. Sex is the last great amateur art. It is for those who enjoy giving all to their life-long beloved, as well as receiving. It superbly expresses one-to-one lifelong, all-giving commitment.

No wonder adultery leaves such a taste of betrayal and treachery.

God must feel wretched sometimes. He gives of his best. We often use it for worse. Perhaps he should have stuck to the baby button. Thank God he didn't.
