THE future of a rundown playground in Nelson will be decided by councillors on Monday.
A report to the Nelson Committee said that Rakeshouse Road playground, which is 11 years old, is in need of total refurbishment and the safety surfacing, although only seven years old, has been vandalised.
The site does not currently conform to the L.E.A.P. (Local Equipped Area of Play) standard adopted by the local authority and it would cost £35,000 to bring it up to standards.
A new playground has recently been constructed at Hodge House, in Nelson, which is less than 300 metres from the playground at Rakeshouse Road, and therefore council planners have said the upgrade could not be justified.
They have recommended that the play equipment should be removed and that the Estates and Property Service Manager should be instructed to add this site to the authorities disposal list.
