TWO young brothers were brutally beaten about the head and body during an unprovoked attack early on Monday (Sept 3).
One of the victims sustained a broken nose and bruising to his body after being repeatedly kicked and punched on the ground.
The attack happened as the brothers, both in their teens, were walking home along Brook Street, Bury, just after midnight.
Police say their attackers, aged 15 and 16, were on cycles. One of the pair is apparently known to the brothers.
Detective Sergeant Duncan Heywood of Bury police said: "A fight started and one of the brothers was punched and kicked.
"He was then headbutted. As his brother tried to protect him, he too was assaulted and knocked to the ground, banging his head.
"While they were on the floor, their attackers continued to kick them about the head and body."
The boy who cracked his head on the ground is detained in Bury General Hospital where he is also being treated for a fractured nose and bruising to his body.
The second brother sustained bruising to his ribs and head. He was released after treatment.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the attack. Anyone with information is asked to ring Bury CID on 856 8150.
