LANCASTER and Morecambe Shoppers should not be kept in the dark about genetically modified foods claims local Euro MP, Chris Davies.
He has hit out at the American Government which is currently trying to force European nations to not put GM labels on genetically modified food because it would discriminate against US companies.
Countries in the EU say the labels should be there for products with more than 1 per cent of GM ingredients to give customers a choice.
Mr Davies said: "The US should not be able to interfere with legislation designed to protect European customers. This is not about the rights and wrongs of GMOs - it's about letting people in Lancaster and Morecambe know what's in their food so they can decide for themselves what to buy."
He added: "The Americans may be less concerned about GM foods but that doesn't mean that they can impose their views on the rest of us."
