MARKET traders in Leyland say they are ready to take on the might of supermarket giant Tesco -- despite rumours to the contrary.
According to the traders business is booming since they moved to the new market site in Ecroyd Street, off Hough Lane, more than a year ago.
They believe the forthcoming Tesco development -- planned to be built next year near the former market site in Southern Towngate -- will bring extra trade into the town, benefiting all businesses in Leyland including the market.
Stall holder Mike Reardon said: "We're not afraid of Tesco. We see it as a combinatory service to the one we have offered to the people of Leyland for countless years.
"We will continue to offer a variety of goods and produce that no supermarket can hope to duplicate."
Traders believe customers will still flock to the market once Tesco is up and running for the service-with-a-smile personal touch.
They say customers can rely on all traders to offer helpful tips and advice about the goods they sell beyond the service given by a big supermarket.
Mr Reardon added: "Our quality is second to none and offered at good prices. Meat and cheese is all local and the fish is fresh from Fleetwood every day.
"The market is like a department store in the middle of Leyland offering goods of every description.
"There is a personal and friendly atmosphere here and we are confident that people will support the market as they always have. We will remain a vital asset to the community.
"We will continue in a tradition that has continued since medieval times in this town and will continue for years to come."
