THE hard work of three men is on its way to being rewarded with a prize for the best-kept churchyard.
Bill Nicholson, George Thompson and John Ruffley have voluntarily kept the churchyard at St Mary's Church, in Lowton, for the past 10 years, and now it has been short-listed for an award.
Judges of the competition were also impressed by the involvement of pupils from Lowton St Mary's School, who helped build bird boxes in the yard.
Rev Bob Britton said: "I'm particularly pleased for the three men that have worked hard for all these years. They deserve some recognition."
If St Mary's is selected as one of the 12 finalists, it will be be featured in a 2002 calendar and will be awarded Qualcast gardening equipment. If it is chosen as one of the three winners, it will receive a cash prize.
The winning churchyards, which have been selected from 400 entrants, will be announced in the second week of November.
