NEW road safety schemes for Fleetwood and Poulton were given the green light this week.
Wyre Council's road safety committee agreed to adopt a range of safety measures at a meeting on Tuesday, including one-way systems, parking restrictions and mini roundabouts.
The death of 13-year-old schoolgirl Rebecca Stackhouse in May prompted new safety measures around Broadwater Station in Fleetwood. Rebecca was hit by a car which was overtaking a stationary bus on Fleetwood Road.
New measures for Broadwater include the introduction of a prohibition of driving order to reduce the amount of traffic movement around the junction, and the re-marking of the junction to improve the sightlines and positions of drivers coming out of the two side roads.
In addition two new warning signs will be erected to indicate that children are crossing, with sub-plates letting drivers know that there is a crossing patrol at the crossing point.
Coun Alan Vincent, who initiated a survey into accident blackspots in the borough, said: "My own children have attended schools in the area and I know that the problems around Broadwater were tragically highlighted last May. We very much hope safety will be improved by these schemes."
And to reduce congestion on Fleetwood's Manor Road, where there have been nine accidents in the past five years, the road will become one-way from Shakespeare Road to Poulton Road. There will also be a waiting restriction on the westerly side of the street and, as a further measure to prevent parents parking on the zig-zags outside the entrance to Shakespeare Primary School, a new "no stopping" order will be introduced.
In Poulton a mini roundabout is to be installed at the junction of Fouldrey Avenue and Breck Road, where there have been six accidents in the past five years.
And plans to formalise a voluntary one-way system which had been operating on Manor Drive, Thornton-Cleveleys, by parents of pupils at Manor Beach Primary School, were discussed at the meeting. The scheme was approved in principle, but changed following discussion in committee. It will be amended and put out to consultation.
The estimated cost of the schemes to the road safety budget is £20,500 No date has been set for the introduction of the schemes, which are subject to a variety of statutory consultative requirements.
