IN the article (August 24) headlined "Fans call for Birthdays ban", Bury FC chairman Terry Robinson and Nick Carter, finance director of Birthdays, declared that those opposed to the sale of other club's merchandise at the Bury FC shop were a "small minority" and a "fringe element".
So to gauge the number of people supporting our view, a petition has been started. To date, more than 1,000 Bury fans have signed.
The logistics of consulting 3,000 regular fans is, as readers might imagine, quite difficult. However, the ten people who were collecting signatures reported that around three out of every four people approached were opposed to the sale of non-Bury FC items in the club shop.
Fans who have not yet had the opportunity to sign the petition will be able to do so at the Shakers' next home game on Saturday, September 8, against Wigan Athletic.
In the meantime, it would surely make great sense if Birthdays and Bury FC re-evaluated their decision and took stock of the fact that our figures indicate that the majority of supporters are clearly opposed to these items being stocked in their club shop even if they are only "nick-nacks".
