SHOPPERS should not be kept in the dark about genetically modified foods, says Euro MP Chris Davies.
Mr Davies, a representative on the European Parliament's Environment Committee, has hit out at attempts to disrupt EU plans on GM labelling.
The European Union has agreed that all foods containing at least one percent of GM ingredients should be clearly labelled, which would give consumers the choice of whether or not to buy them.
The United States government is threatening to impose trade sanctions if the EU plans are put into action.
It claims the new rules would discriminate against US companies and could affect up to £2.8 billion worth of exports.
North West Euro MP Mr Davies said: "The US should not be allowed to interfere with legislation designed to protect European consumers.
"This is not about the rights and wrongs of GM, it is about letting people know exactly what is on the shelves so that they can decide what they buy."
