A MOTHER who claims she found blue tape in a jar of baby food has slammed a £5 offer of goodwill.
Wendy Cross, of Victoria Street, Clayton-le-Moors, claimed she found a three centimetre piece of tape in an 80p Heinz Creamed Broccoli tin as she was feeding her seven-and-a-half month-old son Rhys last week.
She believes that if the tape had got into his mouth before she noticed he could have choked.
She said she contacted Heinz straight away and was shocked when they sent her a £5 voucher within days. S
he had expected them to conduct an investigation before making an offer, and said it felt like they were unconcerned.
But a Heinz spokesperson said the company would conduct a full inquiry and offered Miss Cross an apology.
The voucher could only be spent on Heinz products, which Wendy said she will not buy again.
She said: "I got in touch with Heinz straight away but they made me mad when they sent the voucher. I was expecting a letter first and then that they would investigate before making an offer.
"But by just giving me the voucher it is like they can send it me and forget about it.
"It didn't seem like they were concerned.
"Is £5 all he is worth? I could understand it if an adult but this was baby food.
"I put it in the dish then went to feed him and saw something blue, which was tape. I thought it might have been a plaster.
"But when I pulled it out it was like the tape that seals loaves of bread. It was about three centimetres long. It was enough to have choked him."
A spokesman for Heinz said: "When anybody claims to have found something that shouldn't be there we will ask for it to be returned.
"We will also make sure there are no similar reports. It's difficult to comment further than that.
"Clearly if someone is unhappy we will make sure we get to the bottom of whatever it may be and we apologise for this.
"Our standards of baby food are high and we need to get the product back to have a look at it."
