THE future of a huge bonfire and firework show will be decided at crunch talks this week.

Now organisers are sending out a last-minute plea to businesses to dig deep in their pockets and save the extravaganza.

Blackburn Rotaract are considering cancelling this year's Witton Park fire after a fall in donations from the public.

They feel that people have come to regard the event as council run, and have forgotten that it raises money for local charities.

In the past the East Lancashire Hospice in Blackburn, the RSPCA shelter in Altham and Marie Curie Cancer Care have all benefited from the event.

Chairman of the bonfire committee and vice-president of Blackburn Rotaract Geoff Moss said: "Getting a sponsor last week was fantastic.

"Money is also being raised by town centre publicans, so we should be able to come to some sort of agreement on whether or not this year's fire will go ahead.

Geoff said that members of the club would meet later in the week, and a decision is expected on whether or not the November 3 show will proceed.

Keith Sowerbutts, of Blackburn West Rotary Club said: "It is looking very positive. We have been making arrangements this week, on the assumption that the fire will be held as planned.

"We are delighted by the sponsorship, the donation from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the licensees' collections.

"The Chamber of Commerce has sent out letters to companies they think might be able to offer more assistance, so fingers crossed, the bonfire will be 'on'.

The total cost of the night could be in excess of £6,000. A fireworks display, costing £3,500, is planned.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has made a donation of £1,000 towards the costs and Darwen firm, Brookhouse Holdings Ltd, Darwen have contributed £500.
