A 21-YEAR-OLD man walked down the aisles of a Blackburn shop and swept hundreds of items off the shelves and on to the floor.
Blackburn magistrates heard that Anthony Michael Eastwood, fuelled by drink and drugs, then tried to smash up the computer, causing the shopkeeper to press the panic button.
Eastwood, 21, of Moss Lane, Knuzden, pleaded guilty to criminal damage. After reading pre-sentence reports, the magistrates put Eastwood on probation for two years and ordered him to pay £250 compensation.
Lisa Worsley, prosecuting, said Eastwood had initially bought a bottle of vodka in the Spar Shop on Rothesay Road. He returned minutes later and, after asking for a can of beer, began to push things off the shelves.
"He worked his way down the full length of the shop and two aisles were strewn with goods," she said.
Daniel King, defending, said the incident had taken place just two weeks after Eastwood had been put on probation with a condition that he receives psychiatric treatment. He said the order had not had chance to take effect.
"This was an appalling incident which caused people distress and alarm," said Mr King. "It was fuelled by drink and drugs, but Anthony is aware that he has to take responsibility for his actions and cannot blame drink all the time."
