PAULINE Clare, the Chief Constable of Lancashire, has praised the commitment of police officers and support staff during the race riots in Burnley at the end of June.
During what are now being called "serious disturbances", several shops, cars and homes were attacked, the Duke of York Pub in Colne Road was firebombed and officers were targeted by mobs who pelted them with stones, bottles and other missiles.
The scenes of destruction were filmed by television crews and witnessed in homes across the country.
Since the riots, police have made 120 arrests from the 200 suspects it identified.
In the wake of the riot, 40 detectives were brought together under a senior officer to carry out a comprehensive investigation of a number of serious crimes committed.
These included arson, criminal damage, attempted murder and numerous assaults. CCTV images of a number of people involved in the riots were circulated to police forces nationwide.
Specialist units from across Lancashire and neighbouring forces were drafted in to ensure that an adequate response to the problems was available.
Chief Constable Clare said: "The events in Burnley were extraordinary and called for a professional and dedicated response from everyone.
"The chief officers were deeply impressed by the way police officer and members of support staff rose to the challenge and performed their duties during what was a very difficult and demanding time.
"Many people were asked to perform long and demanding shifts -- often away from their normal place of duty.
"This had an impact on many people's home and private lives and I am equally grateful to their families for their patience, support and understanding."
