GREATER Manchester's top dog is spearheading a new recruitment campaign to find more canine cops.

German Shepherd Caine and his handler, training sergeant Gary Mitchell, helped launch the appeal for new canine recruits.

At a recent South Yorkshire police dog competition, Gary and Caine were up against tough opposition from five other forces, but were the outright winners of the obedience section.

At just two years old, Caine is a shining example of the highly skilled police dogs serving Greater Manchester Police and the community.

Now the search is on for more dogs to follow in Caine's paw-steps and strengthen GMP's dogs section. Inspector Jim Weeden, head of the canine crimebusters unit, said: "We are extremely proud of the achievements of Gary and Caine, and believe it is only right that they lead the campaign for new dogs.

"We recruit on a regular basis to replace the older members of our team who can no longer carry out their duties to the highest of standards."

GMP would like to hear from owners of German Shepherds or any other large working dogs who, for any reason, are looking to find a new home for their pet.

Potential recruits have to be male, aged between one and two years, and have a lively but steady temperament. The cadets will begin their 13-week training course on Friday, which involves obedience, search techniques and other criminal work.

Once qualified, the dogs will work for up to seven years with GMP and most, after completing their service, will spend a happy retirement with their handlers.

To be accepted, all dogs will need a current vaccination certificate.

If you think your dog fits the bill, contact GMP's dog training section, to arrange a home visit, on 0161 856 1791 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
