MRS Vivien M. Banks (Letters, September 6) seems somewhat misguided in her belief that Blackpool Zoo is actually working for the good of animal welfare around the world.
While she is correct to point out that most of today's natural wilderness is under threat and disappearing at an alarming rate, it is simply idiotic to suggest that taking wild animals out of their natural habitat and locking them in cages or "enclosures" is actually acting for their own benefit and not for the purpose of generating a profit for such a commercial business as Blackpool Zoo.
If Mrs Banks has any genuine concern for the welfare of wild animals I suggest she should resign from her post at Blackpool Zoo and try concentrating her efforts on working with such organisations as the World Society for the Protection of Animals or Greenpeace to preserve the natural environments of these many threatened species instead of making money from them.
Incidentally, who exactly are the UFAW?
