ACCRINGTON Fire Station's Red Watch has set itself a new target -- to fit smoke alarms in every house in Huncoat's Within Grove Estate.
Hyndburn firefighters are reinforcing a hard-hitting national campaign to increase the number of smoke alarms in houses .
Station Officer Shaun Naughton said: "Eleven per cent in that area have a smoke alarm but we hope to increase that to 100 per cent by the end of the year.
"Many lives are needlessly lost by not having working fire alarms in the house. They can buy you valuable time before it is too late.
"We are also looking for a joint liaison with the council towards fitting 10 year smoke alarms rather than the one year ones."
Firefighters met residents at Huncoat Residents' Association Headquarters to discuss fire safety and 60 more referrals for smoke alarms were handed in.
If the scheme is a success, other watches at the Accrington station could also concentrate on specific areas within their own allocated areas of Hyndburn in a similar way.
The "Excuses kill. Get a smoke alarm" campaign is backed by Lancashire firefighters, in conjunction with The Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions, and focuses on images of coffins and gravestones to stress the importance of buying, fitting and checking detectors.
