A LETTER of condolence to the American people has been sent to the United States Ambassador in London by the Mayor of Burnley, Coun Jack Alston.
In his letter to His Excellency Sir Christopher Mayer, Coun Alston said he was writing on behalf of the members and officers of the council and the townspeople of Burnley.
The letter was to express deepest condolences at the catastrophic events in New York and Washington.
He wrote: "We are appalled at the suffering caused. This unimaginable loss of life and devastation is overwhelming and we all pray that your countrymen will through the coming days be given great strength to sustain them in the rescue efforts at the two cities and ease the suffering of those affected.
"The people of Burnley are placing their personal messages of sympathy in books of remembrance which will be forwarded to you when complete."
