HE may only have celebrated his 20th birthday last week but Harpal Singh is a man with big ambitions.
He wants to play for England. And if he does, he will become the first Asian player to achieve the honour.
Singh has a long way to go but he believes the quest starts now - at Bury Football Club.
The Leeds United player has arrived at Gigg Lane for a month's loan, which could turn out to be longer if Singh is a success.
The early signs are good. He has made two appearances at Wrexham and Bournemouth and showed superb skills on each occasion.
During one scintilating run at Wrexham he beat four players before delaying his shot an instant too long and being dispossessed.
Then, at Bournemouth, even the home fans gasped when he pulled off a trick which Andy Preece described as like Johan Cruyff.
With England crying out for a natural left-footed winger, Singh is eager to break into the Leeds first team and prove his worth.
And, now he's at Bury, he will get a chance to show David O'Leary he can produce the goods in first team football.
"This is the first time I've been out on loan at a club and I'm really looking forward to it," said the down-to-earth youngster.
"I've been playing regularly for Leeds reserve team but there is nothing like playing first team football.
"I want to play as many games as I can for Bury. The experience will stand me in good stead and I know people from Leeds and other clubs will be watching me so I want to prove what I can do
"I defnitely want to play for England because at the end of the day that's what every kid dreams about. John Barnes was my favourite player when I was young and if I can achieve what he did I'll be more than happy." Singh was spotted by Leeds when he was playing for local kids team Pudsey St Lawrence. He has worked his way up the ranks from under 12s level and is now only kept out of the first team by the brilliance of Harry Kewell.
But he isn't bitter.
"Kewell is a brilliant player. You learn so much just watching him in training," said Singh. "Then there's Jason Wilcox as well on the left and he's good too. Leeds have got two quality players in every position so it's hard work to get in.
"But David O'Leary is known for giving younger players a chance so I've just got to keep playing well."
Singh arrived at Bury completely out of the blue. Leeds assistant manager Eddie Gray asked the winger if he wanted to go on loan and before he knew it, Singh was rushing to Gigg Lane to catch the team bus to Wrexham, where he came on as a second half substitute.
Singh was scheduled to make his home debut against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday but dodgy floodlights put paid to that.
Tomorrow though he will get his chance, when he'll be asked to supply the crosses for the new look front pairing of Jon Newby and Ian Lawson.
Manager Andy Preece added: "Harpal looks a very good player and I certainly didn't bring him here to sit on the bench.
"He likes to take players on and he should give us a lot more flair going forward."
Tomorrow's match kicks off is 3pm. If Singh is playing, it will be well worth the entrance fee.
