FYLDE fans of the silver screen are looking forward to a year of cinematic treats now that Lytham St Annes Film Society's 54th season has begun.
It started last Monday (September 17) with a screening of the award-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and will continue on September 24 with the acclaimed film Memento which tells the story of a man suffering from short-term memory loss who uses notes and tattoos to hunt down his wife's killer.
The society made a permanent move to the the Assembly Rooms, Dicconson Terrace, Lytham, last year and has enjoyed increased membership. But honorary secretary Helen Matthew said new members were always welcome.
"Films are mostly fortnightly on Monday evenings and are a very informal affair. Those wishing to simply watch can do so, whereas if it's a more social affair you're looking for, please come and mingle with other members before and after the film."
She added: "The committee tries to pick a variety of films, which have either won major international awards or have had rave reviews in the UK. Most have not been shown in the area before."
Forthcoming films include Small Time Crooks, directed by and starring Woody Allen, and Magnolia starring Tom Cruise.
And foreign films, such as Butterfly Tongue (La Lengua de las Mariposas), are shown with subtitles rather than being dubbed to maintain their original flare, she said.
The society also issues a newsletter including programme notes at most shows and gives information of other arts and film events.
Membership for the season costs £35. For more details contact Helen on (01253) 828854.
