PEDESTRIANS in one part of Radcliffe have a new "friend" to see them safely across a busy road.
A puffin crossing has been established at Ainsworth Road, with detectors to tell when people are waiting to cross.
It then actively monitors their crossing, controlling the light sequence to allow enough time for them to reach the other side safely before letting traffic flow resume.
The new-style crossing will mean people such as the elderly, mums with young children or those with mobility difficulties, can cross easily and in complete safety.
The puffin crossing has a standard traffic light sequence and does not have a flashing amber like its pelican crossing counterpart. The red and green man, showing when it is safe to cross, is next to the push button.
Councillor Frank Adam, the chairman of Bury Council's highways and transportation committee, said: "This is not the first puffin crossing that we have established in the borough and they have proved to be extremely popular with pedestrians.
"This new crossing point will allow local people to cross Ainsworth Road, which is a busy route, with improved safety."
