AN ARMY major who was born in a humble Tyldesley terrace and was awarded the MBE has died aged 73.
Norman Allred was born in long-gone Alfred Street - but was brought up in Farnworth until he joined the forces at 17 and settled in Surrey.
He worked in Cyprus, Malaya and at various posts in England, receiving an MBE in 1974 for the good work he had done for the services.
Mr Allred, who had previously suffered a stroke, died of pneumonia in St Peter's Hospital in Surrey.
He leaves a wife, Joan, to whom he had been married 49 years, two sons, one daughter, four grandsons and a grand-daughter.
