FREELANCE journalist and former Journal group correspondent Clive Cook has been honoured by fellow professionals for a remarkable 62 years' membership of the National Union of Journalists.
The Atherton man started his career in journalism aged 15 way back in 1926 working for Tillotsons, then owners of the Journal and Bolton Evening News working mainly from the Atherton, Leigh and Bolton offices.
He turned to freelancing and covered the Leigh area at national and local level covering Leigh Magistrates Court for 37 years sand was there on March 30 of this year when the Leigh court closed.
His last job was covering the nominations and Leigh constituency results for the Press Association in the General Election of June 7.
An active union member he was twice chairman of the Bolton branch of the NUJ, first Father of the Chapel of the Manchester nationals' freelance chapel and secretary and chair of the Manchester Freelance Branch. He was also vice-chairman of the union's North West District Council.
Clive, who will be 90 next Thursday, is seen receiving his 60 years' membership certificate from NUJ general secretary John Foster.
