A ROUND-UP of the junior rugby scene.
Leyland Warriors U8s 12 Wigan St Cuthberts 42
LEYLAND made a convincing start to the first game of the season as man of the match Danny MacLean went over the line. St Cuthberts pulled back two tries before Macca scored again. The visitors scored two more to make the half-time score 8-16.
Despite superb work from top tackler Harvey May and others, the Wigan side ran up an impressive clutch of tries in the second half. Macca scored his hat trick just before the final whistle, but the visitors had it in the bag.
Excellent first game performances from Billy Saundry, Matthew Vincent and Jack Martland. This very young team had great potential.
Leyland Warriors U11s 16 Latchford Warrington 32
THE U11s opened their season with an encouraging team performance. The Warriors started slowly and were 10-0 down approaching half-time. The Warriors fought back with tries either side of half-time from Robert Ackers and Chris How to lead 12-10. However, Latchford took advantage of the Warriors fatigue in the latter stages of the game to lead 26-12.
Danny Singleton crossed the whitewash for a third try but Latchford maintained their advantage by scoring late in the game. Chad Salisbury was top tackler.
Leyland Warriors U12s 0 Leigh Miners Rangers 30
A NEW team of U12s played their first game of the season against the highly experience Leigh Miners at Bamber Bridge. A good effort from the team failed to make a score against a well drilled Leigh Miners outfit.
Leyland man of the match Linden Dixon never stopped breaking through the line. Tackling was weak at times but captain Paul Boardman tried throughout the game to keep the line moving up. Total newcomer Ryan Jackson showed great talent for the future.
Oldham Waterhead U14s 12 Leyland Warriors 22
LEYLAND got their season off to a winning start, with a powerful all-round display. Despite conceding an early try, the Warriors soon took control of the match and restricted their opponents to very few other scoring opportunities.
Man of the match, Kieran Mee, posted a hat-trick of tries and also turned provider with a clever crossfield kick that was spectacularly touched down by Mark Quinn. Phil Campbell added to conversions and a penalty goal. Dan Aspinall took the top tackler award for his strong defensive contribution and the match also saw impressive debut performances from new boys Chris Prior and Jordan Hodgson.
Leyland Warriors U18s 22 Halton Hornets 24
WARRIORS played their first league game of the season against Halton Hornets in an entertaining encounter in warm conditions. The Warriors passing and movement in the first half gave man of the match Ian Schofield his first of two tries and Shaun Taylor's touchdowns. Warriors fitness let them down in the second half letting the Hornets scrape a win. Top tackler was Anthony Hughes and Jonathan Tuson was the other try scorer.
