PLANS to improve a bus stop have been re-drawn after a councillor claimed the alterations would cause traffic chaos.

Coun Marcus Johnstone wrote to Lancashire County Council (LCC)demanding highway engineers draw up alternative plans after he received complaints about the impact of the work outside Padiham town hall.

Coun Johnstone, Padiham's county councillor, said that designs for work to improve the bus shelter would allow room for just one bus, when there could be as many as four waiting to park up at any one time.

He said this would cause Padiham to be grid-locked at rush hour.

The county council went to inspect Coun Johnstone's claims and found he was right.

Now they will carry out the improvements, but leave the current parking provisions in place which have room for a number of buses.

The bus shelter was being improved as part of the council's Quality Bus Routes Initiative. The stops are covered, given seating, timetable information and good disabled access.

Coun Johnstone said he fully supported the Quality Bus Initiative but said the project would have been ruined if there was only enough room for one bus at Padiham town hall.

"The entire programme would be wrecked and the travelling public would be seriously inconvenienced.

"There can be up to four buses at a time outside Padiham town hall and it appears that there would only be enough room for one bus."
