A MAN who suffered from major burns as a child is taking part in a sponsored fire walk next month.

Kelvin Golden, 24, who works at M & G Plastics at Progress Mill in Marsh House Lane, Darwen, will take part in the Blaze Fire Walk being held at the County Hotel, Blackburn, on October 13.

The event is in aid of the East Lancashire Deaf Society and involves participants walking across wood embers burning at 1,236 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kelvin said: "It will involve walking over hot coals and will be the fastest sponsored walk ever!"

One on the event's aims is to release fears and doubts and increase confidence and self-esteem.

Kelvin has undergone years of surgery after scalding his hands and head as a baby when he fell into a bath.

But he said he is happy to take part in the fire walk if it helped raise money for charity.

Participants are to undergo motivational psychology seminars known as Learn or Burn in order to equip them with the resources to complete the challenge successfully and unharmed.

Kelvin had hoped to take part in the event last year but missed out after its date was re-scheduled and a special session set up for him fell through.

Colleagues from G & M Plastics have sponsored Kelvin along with his family and friends. If you would like to help boost his fund-raising efforts you can contact him on 01254 671265.

The walk is the closing event of week-long activities in celebration of Deaf Awareness week and all cash raised will go towards improving the deaf society's services in East Lancashire.

If anyone else would like to take part in the challenge they should contact Donna Williams on 01254 52620.
