A CHANCE meeting in a Clayton-le-Moors pub has led to a Blackburn couple celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary.

Sam Dix, 84, formerly from South Shields, and his wife Doris, 89, of Southport, met in the Lamb Inn in Clayton-le-Moors and were married on September 22, 1951, at Blackburn Register Office.

The couple settled in Blackburn, where Sam was a labourer throughout his working life and was employed by Mullard until his retirement aged 63.

Doris, who was a weaver at various Blackburn mills, retired at the grand age of 71 from her cleaning job at Wibis, which is now Northcote Manor, and enjoys playing bingo and dominoes.

The couple, of William Griffiths Court, Blackburn, have been residents at Northwood Nursing and Residential Care Home, in Preston New Road, Blackburn, for a few months as both are suffering from ill-health. They have one son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their anniversary with family and friends at Northwood, where staff organised a party, and are hoping to go out for a joint celebration to mark their anniversary and Doris's 90th birthday next month.
