CABINET minister Stephen Byers will be visiting Leigh to help regenerate the area.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham invited Mr Byers to come to town after the collapse of the Xanadu project to discuss other ways Leigh can be regenerated and jobs can be created.

Mr Burnham said: "The Xanadu decision was very disappointing but at least it put the Leigh area in the spotlight and focused attention on our need for jobs and new investment.

"I am determined to build on that and make something positive out of it. That's why I invited Stephen Byers to come and it's a real boost for the area that he has agreed."

A date and itinerary for the visit are currently being arranged.

When he does come, Mr Byers, who is cabinet minister for the department of local government, transport and the regions, will be shown just how much jobs and new investment are needed.

Mr Burnham said: "The fact that a Cabinet minister is coming to Leigh shows the government is committed to helping us. Now it's my job to make sure that we make the most out of the visit."

And Mr Burnham has pledged to use the visit to press for better transport for Leigh and more funding for Wigan Borough Council.
