ATHERTON LR emerged undefeated from their two games in the past week, but struggled to find the net.

On Tuesday LR were at home to a Fleetwood side still looking for their first win of the season.

Although Steve Powell was called on to make an excellent save in the fifth minute, LR dominated the first half. Fleetwood lost their keeper in the 15th minute through injury, but his replacement, defender Frank Cygal, had a good game and was helped by a poor LR front line.

Mark Parry headed against the bar, but apart from that the two or three on target efforts by LR were easily dealt with. The second half saw Parry head a corner against the post, Mark Baxendale hit a shot over the bar and in the final minute a cross from the left found three unmarked LR players, but with only the keeper to beat, the shot was soft and straight to the keeper.

Fleetwood managed to break through the LR defence a couple of times, but Powell was up to anything they could throw at him.

On Saturday LR travelled to Scunthorpe to play Winterton Rangers in the FA Vase.

They dominated 80 per cent of the match, but again, as on Tuesday, couldn't turn their possession into goals. The solitary goal that saw LR through to the next round came in the ninth minute. Barry Massay was quite blatantly pushed over in the Winterton area, but the referee amazingly waved play on. Mike Rhead picked up the loose ball, ran into the area and squared for Massay to score.

Good work by the LR defence meant that Steve Powell had a relatively quiet time in the LR goal, but on the odd occasion he was called on, he did well to keep the ball out.
