PENSIONERS, asthma sufferers and people with heart disease are just some of those being targeted to take up their flu jabs this autumn.

Health bosses want to see as many as possible of the 23,000 people at risk from flu in Blackburn with Darwen to claim their free jabs.

Lindsay Holden, acting pharmaceutical adviser to the Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust, said: "Prevention is better than cure.

"By claiming their flu vaccine, people can guard against flu and, at the same time, help the NHS concentrate its resources on people with unavoidable illness this winter.

"I would encourage everyone who is eligible, even if they feel fit and healthy, to contact their GP surgery for a flu jab because this is the best form of protection against the flu."

The campaign to encourage people to have their jabs is being organised by the East Lancashire Health Authority with the PCT.

There are 21,000 people over the age of 65 in Blackburn with Darwen and 2,000 others in "at risk" groups including diabetics and others with serious illnesses.

The PCT has published an advice leaflet, which is available in Urdu and Gujerati as well as English. People can also get advice from the NHS Direct website at www.nhsdirect.uk or by ringing 0845 4647.
