PUPILS from across Lancashire celebrated European Year of Languages at a special event held in Clayton-le-Moors.
All 47 Council of Europe countries took part in events around the continent yesterday, with pupils from Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Unitary Council marking the day at Clayton Park Conference Centre.
They demonstrated the value of learning language skills to the world of work.
More than 120 primary and secondary pupils joined blue chip local companies for experience of how languages open doors both to the job market and to leisure travel abroad.
The pupils came away from the event with a better knowledge of local employers, who view language skills as important and useful for their businesses.
County Coun Alan Whittaker, cabinet member for education and young people, said: "Few people can now believe we live in anything other than a truly international business environment.
"But for far too many years people from these islands have been too complacent about being able to speak another language.
"I think young people's natural enthusiasm for languages is putting this attitude to shame."
In addition to the Languages at Work conference, many Lancashire primary, secondary and special schools mark the EYL2001DAY with special language and culture related events with pupils.
