The young grammar school pupil was followed into an alley and verbally abused before being punched in the face and then kicked while on the ground.
He sustained a chipped tooth, swollen cheek and bruised arm in the attack.
The attack was motiveless and Det Sgt Mark Salisbury said the police were very keen to trace the young assailants.
He said: "We will not tolerate bullying and violence towards a youngsters making their way to school. We are taking this incident very seriously and believe the assailants live in the Moorlands area. Our enquiries are continuing."
One of the attackers was about 15 years old, 5ft 10in tall, wearing an orange top, tracksuit bottoms and white baseball cap.
The other is believed to be around 11 years old. He had a pierced ear and was wearing a school uniform.
