TWO Preston bridges have been earmarked for special treatment as officials have a bash at tackling a growing problem.

Bridges in Marsh Lane Railway Bridge, in Preston, and Lytham Road Railway Bridge, in Fulwood, are to be targeted in the scheme which is part of a joint effort by Railtrack and Lancashire County Council who are getting to grips with 'bridge bashing' -- when a vehicles collide with them.

Detailed proposals for each bridge are still to be confirmed. Initial consultations have taken place with district councils such as Preston Borough and now letters are being sent out to parish councils and Lancashire Police inviting comments on the schemes.

A number of other bridges across the county, owned by Railtrack, have been identified and plans are being drawn up to improve lighting, signing and road markings. Bridge fascias will also be painted to make them more visible to drivers.

County Councillor Nora Ward, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "Whenever a vehicle hits a bridge it causes disruption and damage.

"It is clear that action needs to be taken now to avoid further unfortunate incidents."
