BLACKPOOL made it look easy as they took all three points from the Sixfields Stadium on Tuesday night in what was yet another fantastic away performance, writes Chris Reece.

Now Pool need to to repeat these kind of away-day heroics at Bloomfield Road if they are going to mount any realistic promotion bid this season.

The game was so dominated by Pool that it turned out to be the last straw for Northampton directors as they sacked manager Kevin Wilson after a four-year association with the club. The dismissal followed a string of poor results which currently leaves the Cobblers second bottom in Division Two.

The Seasiders' display would have probably beaten Northampton whatever the circumstances. Steve McMahon's side were unstoppable and, backed by a strong and vocal travelling support, they romped to a 2-0 lead by half time.

Both goals came from Brett Ormerod, his 10th and 11th of the season. Ormerod had already hit the post when he opened the scoring after half an hour. Paul Simpson was the orchestrater, beating the Northampton full back to pick out Ormerod in the box. With his back to goal, Ormerod turned and shot giving the keeper no chance.

Before Ormerod's second goal, in-form Lee Collins nearly made in two in a week. But his drive from outside the box was superbly saved.

That didn't matter when Ormerod grabbed his second right on the stroke of half time. After his initial shot was saved, Ormerod was quickest to react to place the ball into the top of the net.

Understandably Pool were a lot more defensive in the second half, but Northampton rarely threatened and Pool keeper James Pullen was never troubled, partly due to the excellent job done by the Blackpool back line of Thompson and Reid.

As it happened, it was Blackpool who were the next to score thanks to substitute Graham Fenton. Although the goal itself was a simple tap-in, the way Fenton was given the opportunity was pure class from Paul Simpson. After Lee Collins was fouled on the edge of the box, Simpson stepped up and superbly curled his shot around the Northampton wall. It looked destined for the top corner but instead it smacked the crossbar and fortunately Fenton was there to tap in the rebound.

Northampton grabbed a consolation towards the end through a Daryl Burgess header.

McMahon admitted after the game that he was delighted with the performance but is "for a clean sheet" after Pool have now gone seven games without one. But I'm sure he'd agree, performances like this one every week would make his job a lot more enjoyable!
