A COMMUNITY saddened by the death of a 23-year-old man, who lost a battle against cancer last month, are raising funds for a cancer care unit.

Michael Luvate, of Broadfield Drive, Leyland, was with his parents at home when he died in August after being diagnosed with bone cancer in 1999.

Now, the keen Preston North End fan is to be remembered at a special fund-raiser on Friday October 5, in Lower House Lane Community Centre, Welsby Road, Leyland.

Michael, 20, had his leg amputated two years ago before the disease spread to his lungs.

Last October he was told his cancer was terminal -- and in less than 12 months he was dead. Michael's mum June said: "He got through the illness with dignity, humour and courage. He was a great son -- he was my husband's only son and he was the youngest of five siblings -- he was my baby."

In October 1999, Michael fell in love with Hayley Scholes, 22, from Ulnes Walton Lane, Leyland, who remained his soul mate throughout his last few years.

June said: "Hayley was a pillar of strength, I don't know what we would have done without her -- she is a very brave girl."

His funeral took place on Monday, September 3 at St Andrew's Church, Church Road, Leyland. June said: "It was a magnificent celebration of Michael's life." Michael's favourite music was played, including a song by The Doors, in which has the lyrics, 'this is the end, beautiful friend, the end'.

The fund-raising event will feature a large raffle, cake stall and bring and buy table as well as stalls selling pasties and peas.

Dorothy Daggers, an organiser of the memorial fair, said: "People have been very generous and really rallied together -- we already have £200 from raffle tickets."

She added: "Michael was determined to enjoy the time he had left -- he was always the first person on the dance floor at parties, even after his amputation.

"He was a Preston North End fan a keen DJ and had ambitions to join the Royal Air Force -- a very lovable lad."

The money raised will be sent to the Young Oncology Unit at Christie's Hospital in Manchester.
