AN exciting four goal haul continued Lancaster City's remarkable record in the UniBond League Cup.
The game was only 25 seconds into the match when Kevin Holliday scored for the cup holders, his first for the team.
The midfielder managed to find the bottom corner of the goal, despite keeper Kevin Wolfe's best attempts to stop it. Only eight minutes later and the Blues were off to a real stormer - a 20-yard effort from Brian Butler hitting the back of the net past the hapless keeper.
Three minutes before the break and Andy Whittaker appeared to be have been fouled in the box and a good appeal was made but the referee gave the keeper the benefit of the doubt.
Workington pulled one back seven minutes in to the second half, courtesy of Stuart Williamson, and in a bid to re-assert their authority Whittaker peppered the Workington goal with ambitious attempts including a spectacular over-head kick.
Against the run of play the visitors equalised after 64 minutes, keeper Mark Thornley could do nothing to stop Lee Blackett's 20-yard shot as it rocketed into the back of the net. But the Lancaster team were not to be stopped and reacted positively.
Brian Welch fired from a full 30 yards with a powerful low shot that the keeper was unable to stop and Whittaker got into the action with only 12 minutes remaining.
The UniBond League's top scorer added a fourth goal to Lancaster's victory and a 14th goal to his personal tally for the season.
Team: Thornley, Rigby, Lyons, Holliday (Burke) Kilbane, Mayers, Martin, Butler (Clitheroe) Whittaker, Welch (McMenemy) Potts.
