A COMMUNITY skatepark for Radcliffe is a step closer to reality after reaching its funding target.

Now young skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX riders are being asked for suggestions on how to spend £50,000 set aside to buy equipment.

The Radcliffe Association of Dedicated Skaters (RADS), which is the driving force behind moves for the facility on Hutchinson Way, is appealing to those who would use the park for ideas on what they want.

RADS founder, Mr Chris Kelman, said: "We believe we have met our £100,000-plus target through donations received and pledges still awaited. "We are keen to get as many local interested parties as possible to our next meeting to decide what sort of ramps and other skatepark equipment we buy and install.

"This is their opportunity to help decide how the £50,000 set aside for equipment is spent. If people don't tell us, we might build something that doesn't meet their requirements."

He added: "We also hope to meet soon with local police representatives, to discuss safety and security issues. Again local skaters need to attend to help us decide rules and regulations for skatepark users."

It is hoped site work will begin at Hutchinson Way in the coming months with the skatepark due to open in March.

The Association meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Adult Education Centre, Abden Street, Radcliffe, 5.30pm - 6.30pm.

Forthcoming meetings this year are: design meeting on October 3 ; safety/security issues on November 7 ; ongoing planning on December 5.
