IT'S Be hi-de-hi-nd you! Ruth Madoc is back in Blackpool this December and it's all because she loves panto. Oh yes she does!
The Citizen spoke to Ruth at Blackpool Grand Theatre's recent brochure launch about her 38th foray into the world of men in frocks. And she had some very interesting insights.
"I think it's the cross dressing that appeals to many people you know," laughed the former Hi De Hi star.
"Society was so very rigid when pantomime first began and it was a sort of release for everyone and also terribly good fun.
"I love panto and I've played the principal boy many times. This December I'm playing the fairy godmother in Tom Bright's version of Cinderella and I'm determined to put some of the old magic back into the role.
"The fairy has become a much smaller part in recent years and along with the whole of panto has become a bit maligned as everyone has become far too cynical.
"But we must remember it's part of our heritage. Also I insist on having all my costumes made and not just hired for the run -- it's an integral part of the magic.
"It will be a wonderful script because it's written as ever by Tom and we've got a great cast with Mark who was Tony in EastEnders and Bobbie Kent as the dame. I can't wait to get going."
Ruth also hopes musical theatre could be making a comeback with the fuss surrounding current film release Moulin Rouge.
"I've not seen anything like this since Grease was first released. I've been offered a part in a musical which is excitingly called Lust and I might just think about it now. It could be a good time."
On her return to the shores of Blackpool, Ruth said: "I'm delighted to see how the restorations are going. I love the Grand Theatre it's so beautiful and I've always enjoyed being here. It's going to look just fantastic."
Ruth and all the gang are in Cinderella from December 12 to January 5 with performances daily at 2pm and 7pm. To book tickets from £7.50 call the box office on (01253) 290190.
