FOUR Fleetwood children are hoping that motorists will be quick to learn their new Go Slow messages which are currently being erected on road signs in the port.

The four pupils won a competition this summer held by Wyre Borough Council to design signs to encourage motorists to kill their speed.

And now their designs are set to be turned into road signs in the port. The colourful pictures will be used on the lower panels of the new 20mph speed limit signs.

Daniel Nicholson, Adam Morgan, Chloe Jackson and Lynsey Shewan -- who all attended primary schools in Fleetwood -- will see their winning designs up on the signs in areas outside schools in Fleetwood.

Adam, eight, a pupil at St Mary's Primary School, London Street, said: "I really enjoyed entering the competition and I was thrilled to be a winner. It's nice to think that my design will be on display for everyone to see."

St Mary's head teacher Mark Rogan said he thought that the competition was a great idea. "Road safety is a very important part of children's education. The whole community needs to do all they can to safeguard the children as road use increases.

"The competition was a super way to raise awareness of road safety both for children and adults," he said.

And Tony Boughen, head teacher at Flakefleet Primary School on Northfleet Avenue, said he was also proud of former pupils Chloe, now at Grange Park school in Blackpool, and Lynsey, now at Fleetwood High School.

"I'm delighted that the artistic talents of our pupils have been put to such good use. I'm sure that their pictures will make the 20 miles per hour signs more eye-catching and so help improve the road safety of the area."

Julia Walters, divisional manager of planning and traffic at Wyre Borough Council, said that the competition was part of the council's on-going commitment to providing a safer environment for all road users.

"The designs are eye-catching and will help remind drivers to think about their speed and adhere to the new 20 miles per hour restrictions," she said.

The signs are currently going up, along with new speed humps, around the Flakefleet Estate.
