SOUNESS was disappointed with the outcome of yesterday's trip to Villa Park although he refused to criticise his players.

"I felt for my players because they put so much work into it," said Souness.

"Our goalkeeper didn't have a save to make and yet we lost 2-0.

"As we've been saying all season, there's nothing wrong with our football we're just missing that cutting edge.

"Matt Jansen had a couple of chances to let go when the ball was on his favoured left foot but, for whatever reason, he didn't take those chances.

"And we maybe should have had a penalty as well but it's all maybes and ifs. We've ultimately gone home with no points.

"We created chances and we should have created more with the amount of ball that we had.

"But we failed to take them and if we keep going down that road then it's going to be a dog-fight.

"If we'd scored first, we would have gone on and won that game.

"I can't fault them for the amount of effort they put in and we played some really good stuff at times but the cutting edge just wasn't there."
