A SCHEME aimed at giving children of the future a glimpse of life in a 21st century town was officially opened on Saturday.
Two years of fund raising and planning finally paid off when the deputy mayor Coun Derek Scholes opened the £20,000 Great Harwood Millennium Garden, near Churchfield house, Park Lane.
Great Harwood Rotary Club asked children to come up with ideas for a centrepiece at the site and took up 12-year-old Raechel Beardwood's suggestion for a time capsule.
The capsule was buried in the garden with letters from schoolchildren, business people and locals describing life in Great Harwood.
It is hoped the capsule will remain untouched for more than 100 years, and when opened, will provide a glimpse into what life was like in the area.
Also among the goodies inside are cassettes, videos, newspaper cuttings and photos.
The garden also contains flower beds, benches and crazy paving.
