A TEENAGER who took his grandfather's car without permission ended up destroying the goodwill between them and landing a ciminal record.
Burnley Magistrates heard how Antony Muldoon, 18, had twice been refused access to the vehicle but was later found in the passenger seat with another youth at the wheel.
Muldoon, of Melrose Avenue, Burnley, admitted taking a vehicle without consent and was fined £150, with £55 costs.
Tom Snape, prosecuting, said the complainant had fallen asleep on his settee and was twice awoken by the defendant asking to use his car.
The grandfather then went back to sleep and Muldoon helped himself to the vehicle. Police followed and stopped it in the early hours. Three people were in the car and ran off. Muldoon was caught and said he had given the car keys to a friend. The defendant had no previous convictions.
Dylan Bradshaw, defending, said the offence was unusual and defied any logical explanation.
Muldoon had been going to a local takeaway in the early hours and had been approached by two young men he knew by sight, asking if he had access to a car.
For reasons he couldn't explain, the defendant said he might be able to get his grandad's vehicle and went for the keys. The trio were driving around with no particular purpose, when they were stopped by the police.
Mr Bradshaw added Muldoon was the only one caught by officers.
He added: "He didn't really get anything out of it. He has destroyed the goodwill between he and his grandfather and got a criminal record."
