POLICE in Burnley are appealing to the criminal fraternity for information about a callous couple who stole from the home of a pensioner on her 84th birthday.
The couple walked into the Mersey Street home of the victim and stole her pension book and £50 cash.
The crooks referred to the woman by name and police believe she was specifically targeted because of her age and vulnerability.
Det Sgt Peter Simm said: "Even members of the criminal fraternity who have elderly mums or grandmothers may well want to tell us the identity of this couple. It was a despicable and mean offence."
He added: "It is even more sad that it happened on her 84th birthday. She was not hurt but is shocked and upset by what happened."
The incident happened at 10am yesterday when the couple went in through the front door. The woman took the old lady into the kitchen and the man stole the property from the front room. They gave no reason for being there.
The woman is described as white, 45 years, 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build and with grey hair. She spoke with a local accent and was wearing a three-quarter length raincoat.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Burnley CID on 01282 472144 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
