Pilkington Recs 12 Roose Pioneers 27 A BELOW strength Recs put in plenty of effort, but lacked cohesion and the extra touch of quality the visitors possessed in their Cumbrian county centre pairing, who proved to be the real difference between the sides.
On a sweltering afternoon, Recs suffered a blow after five minutes when they lost hard working Keiron Lacey through injury.
Forwards John Rees, Ian Connolly and Neil Morris held their own down the middle, but Recs were caught out wide and found themselves 10-0 down on 20 minutes. Cumbrian centre Steve Perry crossed for the first of his hat trick of tries for the afternoon.
Recs responded just before the break through a converted try. A ray of light for them was the strong running of newcomer John Pennington. Following one of his breaks, with good support work from Chris Hillam and Andy Fairhurst, Pennington plunged through for a try. Fletcher converted to cut the deficit to four points.
But Roose got a good start early in the second period as they crossed for another try, quickly followed by a similar effort that saw them trailing 6-20 and facing an up hill struggle.
Midway through the half they had a glimmer of hope when following another Pennington run, the ball deflected off a Roose defender and substitute Chris Bailey reacted quickest to score beneath the posts.
Fletcher added the two points. Any chance of a comeback was snuffed out minutes later as Perry completed his hat-trick for the visitors. A drop goal minutes later rounded off his afternoon with 19 points. From here the game fizzled out as a contest.
The St Helens Roofing man of the match deservedly went to John Pennington. Good games also from hooker Andy Fairhurst who collected the Jaxx Caf Bar individual award. Also Rees, Morris and Alan Fletcher went well.
