GLITZ, glamour and guffaws, this show has them all and it certainly was a glittering spectacle.
From the moment Danny La Rue emerged through sparkle-encrusted doors and on to the stage, bedecked in a gown with more sequins than a busload of ballroom dancers, it was glamour all the way.
The delightful Mr La Rue looked alarmingly like the late Dame Barbara Cartland in his flamboyant frock. But he played up to his audience beautifully. After a glance at the mainly blue-rinsed heads he quickly got them on his side. "Senior citizens! Pah!" he purred. "We're recycled teenagers."
But the star proved that his age -- 74 -- was no bar to energy or sparkling stage presence. He crooned his way through classics by Marilyn, Shirley Bassey and a show-stopping rendition of Send In The Clowns that had to be seen to be believed.
And each appearance brought a new costume, the most amazing surely being a Xena Warrior Princess-inspired leather and gold chain mini number with black thigh-length boots. Wow!
The energetic Tiller Girls provided some high-kicking routines and their permanent smiles were almost as dazzling as their costumes.
More strong support -- and sequins -- came from singer Beryl Johnson with her super-strong voice and enthusiastic illusionist duo Safire.
It was down to Lancashire funnyman Stu Francis to provide an antidote to the glamour with his high energy performance. He had the audience hooting at his antics, which included a performance of his signature song Crush A Grape while leaping among the crowd and thrusting the microphone at people to join in with the refrain: "Ooh, I could crush a grape".
But the unofficial star of the show -- besides Danny's costumes -- was undoubtedly violinist Gary Lovini. With a great range of music from Kentucky blue grass fiddle tunes to classical favourites and a rousing rendition of Land Of Hope And Glory, his magic fingers and flying bow brought some members of the audience to their feet.
