BOSSES at British Nuclear Fuels' Springfield site in Preston say a bomb or high-speed plane would NOT cause a nuclear disaster at the plant.
It follows fears that nuclear centres such as Sellafield, in Cumbria, and Heysham, near Morecambe, could be potential targets for terrorist attacks in the UK.
Spokesman for the Preston plant, Alan Beacham, said: "Springfield, like any government establishment is always protected by high levels of security which have been tightened due to the disaster on Tuesday September 11.
"People shouldn't worry too much because we haven't got the same materials as Sellafield and Heysham -- we are two steps back from Sellafield."
According to Mr Beacham, the materials at the Springfields plant are different to those put in reactors at Heysham and Sellafield and would not cause a nuclear disaster if hit.
He added: "The fuel we make is a solid form of uranium and does not have the potential to be airborne so the problem of it spreading around the country would not exist."
