TRADING standards staff are warning householders to beware of people touting for business on their doorstep.
They say they have had a string of complaints in recent weeks from residents who have been charged exorbitant prices for minor repairs.
Councillor Pam Walker, public protection spokesman, said: "These so-called tradesmen often prey on the most vulnerable, usually elderly people who are living on their own.
"The public need to be very wary of anyone who calls at their home without prior appointment and who offer to carry out services, especially those involving roofing, general building repairs, tree surgery, gardening work and drive resurfacing."
Mr Peter Jagger, trading standards manager, added: "These people rarely, if ever, give any details of who they are and where they can be found.
"Often the only contact information given is a mobile telephone number which cannot be traced.
"By the time the client has attempted to check their credentials they have been paid for the work and disappeared."
He added: "We have heard of cases where people have been charged £1,000 just to replace a few slates on their roof.
"Our advice if anyone knocks at your door touting for work is quite simple, turn them away."
Mr Jagger advised residents to obtain estimates from a number of reputable companies before having work carried out.
Residents are urged to report complaints to trading standards staff by ringing 253 5578.
