CONFERENCE fever will be short-lived next week as the Conservative Party cuts its stay in Blackpool to two days.
The attacks on America and the looming war on terrorism means the Tory conference at the Winter Gardens will last only from 1.45pm on Monday (October 8) until 12.30pm on Wednesday (October 10).
Leader of Blackpool Tories, Coun Peter Callow, said that although he was pleased the conference was to go ahead, he was concerned about the effect on Blackpool businesses.
"I do realise the reasons behind it, but my main concern is the blow to the hotels and conference trade in the town," he said.
Blackpool police have already begun their £1 million operation in readiness for the conference, involving 900 officers and support staff from across the country.
Assistant Chief Constable Julia Hodson, who is in command of the police operation which began yesterday (Wednesday), said there would be an increased police presence in and around Blackpool, but the life of the resort would not be unduly disturbed.
"Following on from the events in New York last month we have taken advice from a variety of sources," she said. "Obviously we did review our security plans and we are satisfied that the arrangements we have put in place are right for an event of this kind.
"This is a very important conference, not just for the Conservatives but for everybody living and working in and around the resort.
"I would ask the public to remain vigilant at all times and if they see anything suspicious they should report it to the police as soon as possible."
