England's captain for the first five Under-21 matches of last season won his first honour at this level in the friendly with the Czech Republic on November 17, 1998 (lost 0-1). Had the misfortune to be injured in this season's opening international against Holland.
MALCOLM CHRISTIE

Started the friendly with Spain in February, having won his first cap as a substitute in the UEFA Championship qualifier in Finland on October 10, 2000 (drew 2-2). Scored in the Holland friendly in August, his only appearance for the Under-21s so far this season.

Featured in the friendly in Hungary on April 27, 1999 (drew 2-2) substituting for the injured Andy Griffin and then had to wait nearly two years for his next Under-21 cap. Has started all three matches of the current season.
JONATHAN GREENING

First capped in the Hungary friendly on April 4, 1999 (drew 2-2) and played in seven Under-21 internationals last season, scoring with a penalty that won three UEFA Championship points in Albania at the end of the March.

His only appearance for the Under-21s came against Georgia at Middlesbrough on August 31, 2000, when he came on for Ashley Cole and scored the last goal in a 6-1 win.

He made his debut in the 4-1 win against Denmark in October 1999 and won his last cap against Spain in February this year before becoming dogged by injury.
JERMAIN DEFOE

Arsenal's youngest ever first-teamer, at 16 years 319 days, became an Under-21 International at just 18. A second half substitute against Mexico on May 24 (won 3-0), his enterprising wing-play set up a goal for Christie inside five minutes.

Already capped by England Under-16s and Under-18s he was called up into the Under-21 squad last season and looks destined for honours at that level. A skilful left-sided defender who can also play in midfield, he has the distinction of being Charlton's youngest-ever debutant at 16 years three months.
