A TYLDESLEY family on the holiday of a lifetime witnessed the horrors of September 11 in New York.
They were just blocks away from the World Trade Centre, which they were due to visit the afternoon that suicide terrorists guided hi-jacked planes into the twin towers, killing almost 6,000 innocent people.
Town centre businesswoman Lynda Hilton told this week of the cruise holiday of a lifetime that ended like a nightmare.
The family shared the sheer panic as they took to their hire car and joined the throngs heading out of Manhattan.
Lynda described the scenes as like travelling through a film set with hysterical people screaming and crying -- and American Air Force fighter planes circling the island.
What an unimaginably, frightening experience. I can't conceive what must have been going through their minds.
Thankfully, they've woken from the nightmare, and are back safe and sound, thanks to P&O Ferries, who brought them home on a 10-day extended holiday -- without charge. There is some good in the world.
That once-in-a-lifetime experience is something I'm really glad I missed.
