DARWEN Civic Society has sited a vandal-proof bench on the corner of Bolton Road and Grimshaw Street to replace a wooden bench destroyed by hooligans three years ago.
The steel bench is now in place at the corner of Grimshaw Street and Bolton Road.
Civic Society committee member Jack Fisher said: "Former councillor Bill Birch campaigned to get a bench at this corner -- particularly for elderly residents living in Mayfield flats.
"We responded and with the help of other charities got a sturdy wooden bench put in place -- but after three years it was vandalised."
"The bench was on such a prominent site on a main road and it was a shame it was wrecked because people enjoyed sitting on it.
"Repairing it would have cost more than having it replaced because its back rails were smashed in."
